Acute Mesadenitis: A Pediatrician’s Look

Mesadenitis, or mesenteric lymphadenitis, mesenteritis – inflammation of the lymph nodes of the mesentery – is often the cause of acute pain abdominal syndrome in children. Diagnosis and treatment of mesadenitis are at the intersection of the interests of pediatricians and pediatric surgeons, which constantly maintains the relevance of this problem. The difficulties of verifying the disease associated with the lack of common diagnostic criteria do not allow us to estimate the true frequency of acute non-specific mesadenitis (i.e., caused by non-specific pathogens) in childhood. In surgical hospitals, the disease is recorded in 11.7-18.4% of patients with acute abdominal syndrome. In children hospitalized with suspected acute appendicitis, mesadenitis is detected in 8–9% of cases. The disease is diagnosed mainly in children aged 5 to 13 years, and more often boys get sick. An early exposure of cat allergens and features of the course of allergic rhinitis in children

According to research, cats are extremely popular pets both in the world and in our country. The widespread occurrence of cats leads to the widespread high concentration of their allergens. The role of exposure to cat allergens in the development and course of allergic pathology, according to published data, remains controversial. Most researchers note the protective effect of an early exposure to cat allergens. At the same time, a number of studies have shown an increase in the risk of developing allergic diseases and a decrease in control over their course.

The aim of this study was to identify the relationship between the characteristics of the course of allergic pathology and the age of the first contact with cat allergens.

The effectiveness of carnitine supplements in children with malnutrition

An important indicator of a child’s health is physical development, violations of which are usually accompanied by a decrease in the level of adaptive resources and anti-infection protection of the body. Another well-known postulate is that weight loss with poor nutrition is a consequence of protein deficiency.

Without disputing these provisions, we draw attention to the fact that leading nutritionists strongly emphasize not only the importance of protein, but also the role of a balanced diet and high-quality diet, especially in young children, with various ingredients essential for their normal growth and development. Among them, not only proteins, fats and carbohydrates are obligatory, but also macro- and microelements, vitamins and vitamin-like substances. The latter include carnitine, the significance of which for the human body has been proven in numerous experimental and clinical studies of Russian and foreign scientists. Continue reading

Vitamin D deficiency in the system “mother – placenta – fetus”

Advances in perinatal medicine, which has been rapidly developing in recent decades, have led to a significant increase in the survival rate of premature babies with very low and extremely low birth weight. However, among preterm infants who have survived critical conditions, follow-up observation shows an increase in the proportion of disabling diseases, including delayed postnatal growth and neurological deficit. It is relevant to find unused reserves for the prevention of growth disorders, neuroprotection, neurorehabilitation and immunotherapy of perinatal brain lesions in premature infants. Such reserves include correction of vitamin D deficiency. Continue reading

Combined acute intestinal infections in children: clinical features, treatment approaches

Acute intestinal infections (acute intestinal infections) remain an important public health problem due to their mass, severe course and the associated economic damage. OCI occupy the 2nd place in the structure of infectious diseases in children after acute respiratory infections, and such a structure has remained practically unchanged over the past decade. According to the state report on the state of sanitary and epidemic well-being of the population of the Russian Federation among children under 14 years old, 526,613 cases of acute intestinal infections, including shigellosis and salmonella, were recorded in 2017. In 2018, this indicator changed slightly and amounted to 518,959 cases. The high incidence rate is largely due to a wide range of pathogens, a variety of transmission routes, high susceptibility of the contingent, as well as the limited arsenal of specific prophylaxis.
